Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your letter. There is no doubt that the Arab Spring has become a Christian Winter. It is not a movement for democracy in the sense that we understand it. It is an Islamic movement, an anti-western movement. And it is replacing governments that were more or less secular or pragmatic with hard-line, radical Islamicist regimes. In each case, the rebels who have overthrown the previous administration are far worse and more intensely hostile to Christianity.

Syria is an unusual state. It has 6% of its population as Christians. These Christians have been mostly left alone by Assad’s secular dictatorship. The rebels who are fighting for the overthrow of the government in Syria are engaged in vicious persecution of Christians and destruction of church buildings.

It would be better if the West left well enough alone and did not get involved in other peoples fights. In each case the West seems to back the wrong side and ends up enabling more radical anti-Christian Islamicist persecutors, such as in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now Egypt.

Our problem is not with Muslims, who we seek to love in a practical, Biblical way, bringing the love of Christ and the saving Gospel to them. But we must oppose false religion. It is the truth that sets people free.

Yes, it is vaguely possible to have moderate Muslims, and I'm sure many of them do not agree with a lot of the most radical things done by the extremists. However, they do not have a tradition of resistance to tyranny. In the Western world, people like Dr. Martin Luther, William Tyndale, and other great Reformers have been able to stand up against the vast majority and say you are wrong! This is one of the strengths of the West. Reform from within. We are self-critical. However, a moderate Muslim is a silent Muslim who just has to go along with the mob. Until that can change, the existence of moderate Muslims is basically irrelevant. Until the moderate Muslims are able to stand up against and effectively challenge the radicals, they are irrelevant.

As it so happens, the moderate Muslim majority has been proved to be a myth by what has happened in Egypt and Tunisia in recent months. The vast majority seem to be very enthusiastically supporting the most radical anti-Christian extremists.

May the Lord continue to bless, guide and strengthen you.

Yours for the fulfilment of the Great Commission

Dr. Peter Hammond
