Dear Mrs Zille 22 October 2008

Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

You are frequently in our thoughts and prayers. Your leadership and courage has been appreciated by Capetonians. We fully support your efforts to restore this city after the gross mismanagement of the ANC.

As the Director of the Christian Action Network, it is my duty to request your urgent intervention against the planned killing of thousands of rabbits on Robben Island by the Robben Island Museum management.

When the management had sought to justify the killing of feral cats on the island, they had announced their concern that the cats would be a threat to the sea bird population. Now, it would appear that the rabbits were the primary source of food for the feral cats, and not the sea birds. After all, the rabbits were first introduced onto Robben Island in 1656.

If the management plans to capture the rabbits in cages and euthanise them, then why can these rabbits not be sterilized and then released? Or even better relocated?

Numerous Animal Welfare organisations, farm, guest lodge and animal sanctuary owners have come forward to offer to accommodate the Robben Island rabbits.

It is deeply distressing that this government, which seems so incapable of dealing with violent crime, has shown extraordinary energy when chopping down millions of trees, and killing thousands of animals.

It has been most traumatic to animal loving Capetonians that the mountain goats on Table Mountain have been hunted out, that huge sections of the Peninsula have been deforested, and now, in the wake of killing the cats on Robben Island, there are plans to kill up to 10,000 rabbits!

2,600 years ago the Prophet Jeremiah wrote: “How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered? Because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and birds have perished.”Jeremiah 12:4

Mrs Zille you have been a great encouragement and inspiration to many in this country. We implore you to please intervene on behalf of the many millions of animal lovers in this country and abroad. Please speak out against the senseless slaughter. Be assured of our fullest support of your decisive action to save the lives of the Robben Island rabbits.
